Child protection planning meetings
Child protection planning meetings
A course supporting professionals to understand and improve practice in Child Protection Planning Meetings (CPPMs).
Learning outcomes
The overall aim of this course is to provide you with a firm grounding in Child Protection Planning Meetings — their purpose, process, potential outcomes and their impact. It will also support you to understand your own responsibilities in preparing for and contributing to a Child Protection Planning Meeting. It uses the National Guidance for Child Protection in Scotland 2021 – Updated 2023 as its anchor, bringing its messages alive into everyday practice.
This course has the child and family’s journey through a Child Protection Planning Meeting at its heart, and it invites you to understand their perspective throughout.
After completing the course, you should be able to:
- Describe what a CPPM is and define key terms.
- Clearly articulate who is involved in CPPMs and what their roles and responsibilities are.
- Describe the process of a CPPM, including what happens before, during, and after a CPPM.
- Promote the participation of children, young people, parents, carers and family members in a CPPM.
- Explain how decisions are reached in a CPPM.
About this course
This resource is not intended to be a definitive guide, as many areas have developed guidance and training in line with the National Child Protection Guidance which is also informed by local experience. Instead, it is a national resource that will help practitioners understand their own role in CPPMs, and how that sits alongside the National Guidance and legislation, while focussing on improving the experience for the most important people involved — the child or young person.
We encourage those undertaking this resource to record their learning in the SSSC MyLearning app.
This course was created in partnership by Iriss and Scottish Government. It was developed with the support of a short-life working group of professionals experienced in CPPMs. Throughout, it features many people who kindly shared their wisdom and experiences via video to form part of this resource. We are grateful to all who contributed to its development.
